  • Web Strategy of The week II: Don’t make your visitor surf a lot

    Saturday, September 12th, 2009
We know you want visitors to spend a lot of time on your site. But he/she shouldn’t spend 70% of the time roaming over irrelevant objects to him/her.

Often who visits your site want to be converted. That’s why he came to your site. But we see site owners make it difficult for them to get converted. We often see more visitor need to surf more to find what he or see wants, more chances are their he/she quits the site and don’t think to comeback again.

    So here are the rules:
    a) Make your services easier for me to find:

You can check our site. We placed the direct links to our major services on our main navigation bar instead of putting these under a service tab. Again we categorized our services for each of our target market. And also we have a search box attached which make it easier for you to find our services within a fraction of time.

When anybody comes to your site, he/she is coming to know more about your services rather than your company. And if he likes your services then the next step he does is going to checkout whether you are a good company or not. So give 1st preference to your service on your site.

    b) Make your contact details readily availability:

As soon as the visitor decides to take your service he/she will search the contact details. So a readily available contact details will benefit you. Place a call to action button that takes to your form on each page so as soon as they decide to buy you they will give you their details. And you know “Time is Money“.

    c) Put links to your blog articles, videos, slides on a perticular service on that service page itself:

In maximum cases a visitor doesn’t decide on its first visit. So he/she needs to know more about your service and its importance and they need to come to your website again and again. So it is a good idea to call them to see your blog posts, your videos & your slides.

Site owners often put a link to the home of the blog. But think a while, your blog contains posts about other services or topics also, in which he/she may not be interested. So while putting links ensure the link leads them to the related blog articles. You can do it by putting a link to an archived page for a certain tag which facility is readily available in most of the blog softwares.

If you have more ideas, please reply below I’ll follow it up. If you want to discuss more with me on “website strategy” please tweet me @sanmaya quickly. I’ll request you to follow me.

Web Strategy of The week I: Do an early stage engagement

    Saturday, September 5th, 2009
How can you get more convertible lead? How to do an early stage engagement with your visitors. Your website strategy for this.

leasure-meet-weding-bizIf you had read our blog post on benefits of reaching your customers early, you would have understand how crucial it is to engage with your target market as early as possible. Today I’ll discuss about how to do an early stage engagement with your customer by using your website and other online media.

    a) the best way to know how, is to meet your present client base

I can’t give you all the data relevant to your business. So we meet our clients on regular intervals to know what better we can serve them. How things are going on. Do they have any idea to increase the potential of their site.

But the important thing we ask them is, “When you were looking for a web designer or company what was the first thing you did?” Then we note it down how they found us gradually.

One of our client told me, “We didn’t search Google or gone online to do it.  Instead I asked my managers if they know somebody very good in web designing.” So we had a conclusion that it is good for us to meet their professionals or managers and to engage with them as early as possible. But for a small team like us it was not possible for us to meet them. So we searched even better and found that they are using different social media sites. So we engaged with them online and made the conversation with more personal touch.

We told each of our employees to have a personal touch with as many other professionals as they can. And to our surprise they not only gave the project of their company to us, but gave project of other 2-3 companies also as one of his friend is working in that company.

We use Orkut, Twitter, Face book, Hi5 etc to engage with them, but we never used marketing them to, we discuss about our professional and personal life and some time we share our experience with a project with them.

    b) The second best thing to be on Google

More than 62% of professionals start their online activity searching Google and 80% of the professionals search B2B projects on Google. So when they are searching Google why not to be on Google? For being on Google several companies would recommend you to run SEO campaigns etc. Yah! It’s important. But before doing that make your contents appealing, more problem solving and regularly put fresh contents to your site. This will give you a boost on your SEO activities. For a detailed SEO visit our SEO section or wait for a blog post.

    c) The third best thing is to be on blogs

Your blog should solve the early queries in their mind, so it should b your prime focus to write articles on it. So when they Google a query, your blog article will be the one to solve it. So it will give you an early engagement with them. But don’t forget to maintain about your blog articles on other social media where you have a presence.

But more importantly you should have a good presence on other blogs than too. If you are a cosmetic company you should have a presence on cloth companies’ blog / lingerie blog. But be social, don’t spam. Do a healthy discussion their. Yah, you can mention, “when our client come to shop cosmetics they too agree that good lingerie help them to make their man in mood. I do agree with you. “This is by no mean a spam but the other people commenting their will know you are a cosmetic company and engage with your clients more.

    d) The fourth best thing “I don’t know!”

Yah! Website strategy is an evolving topic and it has many face and facts. So you may invent a new, we may invent a new! As soon as we will get something new you could see that on our “video of the week”.

What a small biz can learn from that auto driver..

    Sunday, May 17th, 2009
An article on Time management and bringing an early engagement with your clients. A must read for CEOs and Business Owners

If you are staying in India auto rickshaw is a common thing for you. Few days ago I saw a little innovation in marketing by an auto driver.

I was going to my college (whoever don’t know I’m also pursuing BE in Mechanical Engineering besides working in my company) but missed my college bus. So I thought to go by auto. But as I’ve a lot of time in my hand I thought to pick up a shared auto (a video on shared auto) which can drastically reduce my travel expense to 1/3rd.

There is a circle where the auto rickshaws used to stand. The people used to come there and pick their auto which is also shared by 3-4 people. But in morning there used to be less frequent customers. So my auto driver went a bit back & picked up people. Making me amazed the auto was filled up within just 2 minutes instead of 10-15 minutes and I was a bit confused! How he did it & why he did it? Because those people would have came to him only. Why he did travel a 100meter extra? I planned to calculate how much he is gaining or loosing from other auto drivers. I found that his income is about 44% higher than that of other auto drivers.

I was surprised how he did that. He started filling up when his turn came. He picked up the same people who were coming to pick his auto and he covered a 100m extra. I did a simple calculation as follows:

When I asked him how he found this effective technique, he replied, “Just from regular observation.”

What a small biz can learn from it?

I made some notes which I think is worth sharing.

    i) Businesses should closely observe their customers

If you are running a website then closely observe the analytics, where from they are coming i.e. the source or referring sites, their geographies, their demography etc.

ii) Come one step closer and engage them early:

If you are seeing more visitors are coming from a referring website, go one step close by increasing your presence in that website (b’coz your target audience is there). So reply more to their blog posts, you can also discuss about some peoples’ reply there. You can even request for a guest blogging in that blog. As they have made a link to you and user finds it terribly good, your blog post valued more to them.

You can see the same thing in our site. We are now developing different microsites (under progress) for each target market we found in doing business. Here we are engaging with them before they come to us for a solution that we are providing as a service. This saves a lot of time in our marketing. Usually companies are satisfied that their target market is visiting their site. But if they will push themselves a little further to help visitor more, then they can save a lot of “time=money”. [If you are tweeting about this article please use a has tag of #timeismoney]

So if you are selling a chocolate making device, then join your target audience at chocolate making training websites or at chocolate company website or chocolate lover associations.

iii) Save time in every process. Because 13minutes = 44% more income:

This incident made our people to sit and think where we can save more time. And we found some measurements which told us that we can get 3months of holiday in a year fulfilling the same target doing each bit of work.

You seem to learn bit more from this auto driver?? Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment and tweeting me @sanmaya.

And Once Again It’s A R Rehman and the Oscar!

    Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Hey, I’m completely thrilled. It’s Oscar Day for India. India got Oscar for Slumdog & Oscar for “Smile Pinki”. As a creative company based in India we are proud for all these. Congratulations to all the winners. So here are the wins: AR Rehman for best original score and the second is best song for “Jay Ho!” (Guljar s also there), Resul Pookutty for Best sound mixing in Slumdog Millionaire and American filmmaker Megan Mylan for her documentary based on India “Smile Pinki”.

So we are posting Videos of acceptance by A R Rehman and don’t forget to see Pookutty & “Smile Pinki” (trailer posted at the bottom of this post). We are also posting the CEO takeaway out of it of this month tomorrow.

Wait for the video. It’s coming all its way from Oscar

But I’m so passionate about the “Smile Pinki” which is a tell of a little girl Pinki, who was being treated for her by born lip deformity. Really it’s a great smile. This remembered me of my friend’s brother with same deformity and mental imbalance. We all was loving him and did a lot to make him able to walk and talk. And I got to know there was another documentary on India nominated for the Oscar: The Final Inch. I really appreciate the work of both the film maker and the organizations that made this happen.

    More videos, more the conversion!

    Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Sorry Yo! I’m late. I was busy with so many government stuffs (it really ridiculous). We lost a lot of Data as ma’ hard disk burned out. (I learned how important is you backup. So back up on daily basis). Then recession started to put load on us. So before anything wrong can happen we started discussing it with our clients and helped some of them to come over the situation. We are happy that all clients are retaining with us for as long as 4 and above years. So it’s a busy and hard new year for me personally. But dat’s not the excuse. I should post articles at least twice a month. Excuse me. But we are a small team….. STOP…… STOP, STOP.

OK let me write the blog.

Today web is just amazing. You are free to express anything by a lot of means and the best thing about it is it is cheap & most of the time free!

While we were experimenting with various technologies, we found out the videos to be very effective in different circumstances. Now people are experimenting with it in various forms. Recently I saw a shoe start-up using the site very effectively. They have one video with each of their product, describing the making of that product. It is really amazing. It works very well when we surveyed. It just changed my view. How a non-marketing video can increse your sales!

Before 2years I was thinking if we will put funny stuffs in our site it will be unprofessional. But latter on I fell in love with them. I fell in love with Twitter people, Hubspot people, Google guys and several other start up firms. The world is changing to a funny work place and thus you are always a person-professional and not a professional person at all. So who doesn’t think it’s a good idea to have a non-marketing videos on their site, try it otherwise your weakest competitor can over cross you.

You can see a lot of videos (marketing, funny, educational) will be used in our site and our client sites. I don’t want to see business videos but I wana to sing about my work like this, (as WP guys did)

Final Touch: It saves a lot of time than writing a post!

Happy Birth Day Samanta Chandra Shekhar (Pathani Samanta)

    Saturday, December 20th, 2008

Yesterday was the 173rd Birth day of Samanta Chandra Sekhar, we fondly call Pathani Samanta, the great astronomer of Orissa. We really salute the brave soul, who exactly calculated the height of the mountains on moon by just two bamboo sticks, without having the facility of telescopes.

    Samanta Chandra Sekhar

    Samanta Chandra Sekhar

As an amateur astronomer, I was really surprised to know that he calculated the Sunrise and set time with error of just 0.0005~0.003 seconds during my project work, which is really unique in the world. All the other methods aren’t able to give such a high accuracy. He really had a superb geometrical analysis power. You will mostly find his instuments made up with sticks that tells us the exact location of solar eclipse whrever in the world.

I want to make some thing very proudly clear: Samanta chandra Sekhar is the first man in the world to strongly support that it is the center of mass (or gravity) (of a two body system) around which both Sun and Earth is revolving rather than sun moving around earth or earth moving around sun, which was misunderstood by other astronomers as the geocentric hypothesis. Whoever has a doubt plese go thro’ “Sidhhanta Darpan” book. Or, plese visit:

    http://www.geocities.com/uuphy2000/psbipin.PDF

Later most of his research was moon oriented and he discovered so many anomalies of moon, the height of mountains and depth of creaters on moon, with naked eye with very high precision. Only error around some meters.

I’m very much proud that I used his calculations for my project and got some unsolved answers which I could not solve by modern methods. I used the satelite imagaries for one and half year and concluded that Pthani’s formulla is the most error free. For him only I was able to finish my 10years’ work in 2 and 1/2 years. My research article will be published after the completion of phase two.

The only thing he will teach you, budding enterpreneurs, is that have a strong determination, nothing is impossible, even though you have shortage of resources.

The above picture is collected by me from SCAAA (Samanta Chandra Sekhar Amateur Astronomers’ Association, where I’m a life member). You are free to share this article or picture among others, speak about it on Twitter etc etc, You know better than me.
